L-citrulline is an amino acid. It increases vasodilation by increasing plasma arginine levels. It is very effective at increasing nitric oxide (“NO”), since vasodilation is primarily mediated by NO production by endothelial cells. Several studies have shown an increase in the number of reps before fatigue, an increase in power output, and a reduction in fatigue with citrulline use. Citrulline may also reduce blood pressure and improve erectile dysfunction [1].
Beta Alanine is a non-essential amino acid. It combines with the amino acid histidine to form a dipeptide called carnosine. Over time, carnosine acts as a buffer to help delay the onset of lactic acid and muscle fatigue and failure, while building endurance and improving recovery. Also, beta alanine, as a building block of carnosine, may be an antioxidant and anti-aging compound. Beta alanine may cause a harmless tingling sensation called paresthesia. In fact, beta alanine does not need to be taken pre-workout necessarily, but so many people associate paresthesia with pre workout products, that it is often included in pre workout formulas. Note that in order to reap the full benefits of beta alanine, take at least 3.2 grams per day, even on your off days [2,3].
L-tyrosine is a stimulatory amino acid that is very common in the human body. It shines when acute stressors are present, like sleep deprivation, by reducing the stress via assisting in producing noradrenaline and dopamine. It may assist in overcoming stress-induced memory and attention deficits [4, 5].
Caffeine is a renowned stimulant with numerous, positive health and ergogenic benefits. Caffeine antagonizes adenosine receptors promoting wakefulness and influencing the dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and adrenaline systems. Fat loss effects from caffeine typically occur above 200 mg and acute strength benefits occur at 4-6mg/kg of bodyweight. It is classified as a nootropic because it sensitizes neurons and provides cognitive improvement. It may reduce the risk of alzheimers, liver disease, and cirrhosis. Caffeine is the most researched stimulant in existence and very well tolerated [6].
L-theanine is an active ingredient in green tea that helps reduce anxiety and is synergistic with caffeine [7].
